چکیده
The purpose of this review is to highlight recently published important articles on upper airway diseases and immunotherapy. We review articles on rhinitis, sinusitis, conjunctivitis, and immunotherapy. New insights into epidemiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis, and therapy are described for each of the above diseases. Regarding immunotherapy, we discuss numerous clinical trials on sublingual and subcutaneous immunotherapy, mechanisms of immunotherapy, safety, and use of modified allergens and biological agents for immunotherapy.

Recent Progress in Allergen Immunotherapy
The efficacy of allergen immunotherapy for the treatment of allergic rhinoconjunctivitis with or without seasonal bronchial asthma and anaphylaxis caused by the sting of the hymenoptera class of insects has been clearly demonstrated in numerous well-designed, placebo-controlled trials. Immunotherapy whether by subcutaneous injection of allergen extract or by oral/sublingual routes modifies peri...
متن کاملLung-derived innate cytokines: new epigenetic targets of allergen-specific sublingual immunotherapy
Objective(s):Sublingual allergen-specific immunotherapy is a safe and effective method for treatment of IgE-mediated respiratory allergies; however, the underlying mechanisms are not fully understood. This study was planned to test whether sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) can exert epigenetic mechanisms through which the airway allergic responses can be extinguished. Materials and Methods:BALB/c...

hyperresponsiveness was significantly reduced in the SIT group, both in and out of season, when compared with controls (P .05). Of nonasthmatics, asthma developed in 19 of 79 in SIT group and 32 of 72 controls. Children receiving SIT had improved VAS scores for conjunctivitis (P .001) and rhinitis (P .01). Conclusions. This study indicates that specific immunotherapy for seasonal rhinoconjuncti...
متن کاملDetermination of immunological stress and oxygen free radical formation in white blood cells during allergen immunotherapy
BACKGROUND Airway inflammation represents the basis of respiratory allergic disease and is generally associated with increased oxidative stress. As a consequence of successful treatment leading to hyposenzibilization and remission of symptoms, decrease of reactive oxygen formation is expected. MATERIAL/METHODS This preliminary study evaluates the production of oxygen free radicals in white bl...
متن کاملAllergen-encoding bone marrow transfer inactivates allergic T cell responses, alleviating airway inflammation.
Memory Th2 cell responses underlie the development and perpetuation of allergic diseases. Because these states result from immune dysregulation, established Th2 cell responses represent a significant challenge for conventional immunotherapies. New approaches that overcome the detrimental effects of immune dysregulation are required. We tested whether memory Th2 cell responses were silenced usin...
